Salted Vanilla Cold Brew

Salted Vanilla Cold Brew! DIY cold brew with homemade salted vanilla syrup! Save money and make delicious coffeehouse-style drinks at home! 



For the Cold Brew:

1 3/4 cups coarsely ground coffee beans {preferably dark roast}

4 cups cold water

For the Salted Vanilla Syrup:

1 1/2 cups water

1 cup granulated sugar

1 packed cup brown sugar

1/4 tsp sea salt

1 Tablespoon high-quality vanilla extract 

For Each Serving:

2 Tablespoons Salted Vanilla Syrup

3/4 cup Cold Brew

1/41/2 cup cold water

cream or whole milk, to taste

ice {optional}


For the Cold Brew:

  • Combine the coarsely ground coffee beans and water in a large mason jar.  Either stir with a long-handled wooden spoon or tightly screw the lid on the jar and shake for a minute or two. 
  • Place the jar in the fridge for at least 12 hours.  For maximum flavor, let it steep for 18-24 hours.
  • After the steeping time, line a medium -size sieve with a flour-sack style towel {use one that is solely dedicated to this~ it will stain!}.
  • Place the lined sieve over a quart measuring cup.
  • Pour the steeped cold brew into the sieve. Let drain completely.
  • Pour the strained cold brew into a large clean storage jar and refrigerate until ready to use.

For the Salted Vanilla Syrup:

  • In a medium-size saucepan, combine the water, sugars, and sea salt. 
  • Stirring frequently, bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Lower the temperature and simmer for ten minutes.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and add the vanilla extract.  Stir to combine.
  • Let the syrup cool and transfer it to a bottle or jar.  Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

To Make Salted Vanilla Cold Brew:

  • To a tall glass, add 2 Tablespoons of Salted Vanilla Syrup.  Stir in 3/4 cup cold brew + 1/4-1/2 cup cold water. Add cream or whole milk, to taste. Stir well and add several ice cubes. Enjoy!


  • The Salted Vanilla Syrup yields approximately 2 1/3 cups. You’ll have plenty for several batches of Cold Brew. Or, add it to iced tea! Pour it over oatmeal or pancakes! Or, add it to a tall glass of ice-cold milk for a delicious caffeine-free beverage!
  • If you can, splurge on a high-quality vanilla extract! I used a vanilla extract from Penzey’s
  • The 18-24 hour steep time will give you a more flavorful cold brew! It may become bitter if left to steep over 24 hours.
  • The cold brew concentrate yields approximately 2 3/4 cups.
